Topical Authority: Become the Expert

Topical authority is Google's evaluation of whether your site is an expert on specific topics. Sites with high topical authority rank better across all keywords in their topic area.

Instead of ranking for individual keywords, you're building authority that helps you rank for entire topic categories.

How Topical Authority Works

Check My SEO Score

Google analyzes your content to determine what topics you're an expert on. It looks at: - Breadth: How many subtopics do you cover? - Depth: How comprehensive is your coverage? - Structure: Are related pages linked together? - Consistency: Do you consistently publish on the topic?

Sites covering a topic comprehensively, with strong internal linking and consistent publishing, are awarded higher rankings for all keywords in that topic.

Building Topical Authority

Choose your authority topic. What do you want to be known as an expert in?

Identify all subtopics. Break the main topic into subtopics. "Project management software" → "time tracking," "team collaboration," "resource planning," etc.

Create comprehensive content. For each subtopic, create in-depth content. 2,000-5,000 words each.

Link strategically. Create pillar pages and link clusters (as discussed earlier). Link between related pages.

Publish consistently. Add new content monthly. Show Google you're actively developing expertise.

Demonstrate expertise. Author bios, credentials, publication history all show expertise.

Topic Depth vs. Breadth

Don't be too narrow. Cover enough subtopics to show real expertise.

But don't be too broad. "All of marketing" is too broad. "Email marketing" is the right level.

The Compounding Effect

As you build topical authority: - You rank for more keywords in your topic - You rank higher for those keywords - You get more traffic - New content ranks faster - You dominate your topic

This compounds. After 12-18 months of focused content, you're the undisputed authority in your niche.

Measurement

Google Search Console shows topics you're associated with. Search for your main keywords and see positions.

Over time, you should see: - More keywords ranking - Higher positions across all keywords - Faster indexing of new content

The Competitive Advantage

Most sites scatter content across many topics. You focus on one and dominate.

Competitors can't out-topic-authority a focused expert. Even larger competitors with broader coverage rank lower in your specific topic.

RankWizrd identifies topical authority opportunities and shows you your current authority across topics.
