Site Architecture: Build for Crawling and Rankings
Site architecture (how pages are organized and linked together) affects how Google crawls your site and how authority flows through it.
A well-designed site architecture improves SEO significantly.
Shallow vs. Deep Hierarchy
Shallow hierarchy: Home → Category → Page (3 levels)
Deep hierarchy: Home → Category → Subcategory → Product Type → Page (5+ levels)
Shallow is generally better. Pages closer to homepage (fewer clicks away) get crawled more often and accumulate more authority.
But if your site naturally has many categories, some depth is needed.
Logical Organization
Organize pages logically. Related pages should be near each other in the hierarchy.
"Project management software" should be organized: - Home → Software → Project Management → [specific articles]
Not: - Home → Random pages with no clear organization
Homepage Authority
Your homepage is your most authoritative page. Link from homepage to your most important category pages. This distributes authority.
A homepage with no internal links wastes authority potential.
Breadcrumb Navigation
Breadcrumb navigation (Home > Category > Subcategory > Page) helps users understand where they are. It also helps Google understand site structure.
Implement breadcrumb navigation for anything more than 2 levels deep.
Avoiding Orphan Pages
Orphan pages have no internal links pointing to them. Google can't find them (if not in sitemap) and they don't accumulate authority.
Check for orphan pages. Link to important ones.
Mobile Architecture
Mobile and desktop should have same information architecture. Don't hide important content on mobile or reorganize pages.
Google primarily crawls mobile. Mobile structure must be good.
URL Structure Alignment
Your URL structure should match your site hierarchy.
example.com/software/project-management/asana-review
This URL tells you the hierarchy: Software > Project Management > Asana Review
Misaligned URLs confuse crawlers.
Siloing Strategy
Content silos are groups of related pages linked together. Create silos around topics to strengthen authority on each topic.
All project management pages linked together form a silo. Google recognizes the silo and ranks all pages better.
The Authority Distribution
Authority flows through internal links. Pages with more internal links accumulate more authority. You can strategically direct authority to important pages through linking.
Link to your money pages (pages you want to rank) from many other pages.
